The Benefits of Attending a Public Ivy League School

The Benefits of Attending a Public Ivy League School

What does an Ivy League education mean?

Ivy League universities are renowned for their academic superiority, rich history, and ability to educate the next generation of leaders. These universities, and others like them, only accept the best of best. Viewed as the pinnacle of American higher education, they boast resources and faculty thought to be unmatched across the globe. But what if you could attend a university that offered an Ivy League education at a public university price? Look no further than the modern Public Ivy, more specifically the University of Vermont.

What is a Public Ivy League School?

A Public Ivy is an institution that displays the academic excellence, traditions, look, and feel of an Ivy League university. Originally coined by Richard Moll in 1985, “Public Ivies” are universities capable of matching the faculty, academic standing, resources, and pride of an Ivy League school, but at a more welcoming price. The original list of public ivies contained 8 universities, including UVM.

What does UVM offer students?

As one of the original Public Ivies, the University of Vermont offers students the ideal blend of old and new. Established in 1791 and the fifth oldest university in the northeastern USA, UVM’s campus features numerous beautiful brownstone buildings on a lush and well-maintained space. Tucked away in bustling Burlington, UVM is part of a progressive and contemporary hub wherein culture and campus pride meet.

From an academic perspective, UVM has achieved a number of notable rankings that are indicative of its Public Ivy status. In 2018, U.S. News and World Report ranked UVM as a top 100 university in the United States (#96). It also ranked 40th on Business Week’s list of top 50 U.S. colleges and universities whose bachelor degree graduates earn the highest salaries. UVM is a respected research university as well, with a top 50 national public research university ranking. Such rankings as they relate to academics, faculty, and campus resources are traits common to a Public Ivy university.

Public Ivy universities supply students with the resources, accomplished faculty, and atmosphere of an Ivy League school, but at a fraction of the cost. These universities provide students with the opportunities and experiences that match some of the top schools in the world.

Cost should not be a deterrent in obtaining a high quality education, and with Public Ivy schools like UVM, it doesn’t have to be. For international students who are interested in studying at the prestigious University of Vermont, learn more about our undergraduate and postgraduate pathways here.
